Jakarta Police ready to deploy personnel to safeguard Gaga concert

Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said on Tuesday that they were preparing between 2,000 and 4,000 officers to safeguard US singer Lady Gaga’s planned concert in the event that the National Police ultimately issued a permit.“Our stance is still the same: we won’t recommend the concert be held. However, as part of the National Police, of course we are ready to safeguard the show if the National Police decide the show can go on as planned,” he told reporters.
Rikwanto said that the number of officers to be deployed was similar to that deployed at all concerts by foreign performers at Bung Karno Stadium over the years. “The number of 2,000 to 4,000 officers is nothing special.”
However, he said the number of officers could be increased if necessary.
Rikwanto also urged all mass organizations to refrain from disrupting the show. “We ask everyone to maintain public safety and security during the show. Anyone attempting to trigger chaos and unrest will be punished.”
The National Police said Tuesday they would issue a concert permit for Gaga if the promoters got recommendations from the Religious Affairs Ministry and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).
Article 15 of the 2002 Police Law stipulates that it is the National Police who have the authority "to issue a permit for and monitor activities involving crowds".
Gaga’s concert in Jakarta, slated for June 3 at Bung Karno Stadium, has been in limbo following objections by numerous conservative groups and the Jakarta Police’s aversion to recommend that the National Police issue a concert permit.
